How to Layer for Winter (Without the Bulk)
The secret to a warm winter outfit is several lighter pieces that work together. Here is how to build a layered look, step by step.

The secret to a good winter outfit isn't one heavy piece. It's several lighter ones that work together. Layering keeps you comfortable as you move from a cold platform to a warm office, and it gives a simple outfit depth and texture. Here's how we build a layered look without feeling bulky.
1. Start thin and close to the body
Your first layer should be smooth and fitted, so everything on top sits neatly. A fine long-sleeve top, a ribbed top or a slim turtleneck works well. Think of it as the canvas. Keep it plain, so the pieces you add later can do the talking.
Try: our Tops & Blouses, especially the long-sleeve and ribbed styles at the top of the page.
2. Add warmth in the middle
This is where knitwear comes in. A cardigan is the most flexible mid-layer you can own. Wear it buttoned on its own, open over a dress, or under a coat. A button-tab or ribbed cardigan adds texture without the weight of a chunky jumper.
Try: Grace, a ribbed button-tab cardigan, Helen, a ribbed longline cardigan, or browse all Knitwear & Cardigans.
3. Use a vest for warmth without sleeves
A sweater vest or gilet keeps your core warm while your arms stay free, so the layer under it still shows. It's the easiest way to make a shirt or long-sleeve top feel like a winter outfit. A cable-knit vest over a collared shirt is a classic that never dates.
Try: Vivian, a cable-knit V-neck vest, or Roxanne, a textured button-front gilet. The full edit is in Vests and Gilets.
4. Finish with the right outer layer
Your coat should be roomy enough to go over knitwear without pulling across the shoulders. When you try a coat, wear the thickest layer you'd normally put under it. A longline coat covers longer layers neatly, and a quilted jacket is the practical choice for wet, cold days.
Try: Coats and Trench Coats or Puffer Jackets.
Three rules that always work
- Mix textures, not just colours. Ribbed with smooth, knit with tailored. It looks considered even in one colour.
- Vary the lengths. Let a longer cardigan peek out under a shorter jacket, or a shirt hem show below a vest.
- Keep one tone. Camel, cream, grey or chocolate from top to toe looks polished and makes layers feel intentional.
