The Coat Guide: Find Your Shape

Longline, mid-length, trench, puffer or blazer? What each coat shape does best, how to wear it, and how to get the fit right.

The Coat Guide: Find Your Shape

A good coat is the piece you'll wear most this winter, so it's worth choosing the right one. Instead of starting with colour, start with shape. Here's a simple guide to the main coat and jacket styles, what each does best, and how to wear it.

The longline coat

Best for: polished everyday wear, from the commute to dinner.

A longline coat falls to the knee or below and creates one long, clean line. That's flattering on almost everyone and makes even jeans and a jumper look put together. Look for a tailored shoulder if you want structure, or a softer draped shape if you prefer an easy fit.

How to wear it: over a midi dress with boots, or over wide-leg trousers with a fine knit.

Try: Arabella, a tailored longline coat, Clarissa, a longline draped coat, or Adelina, a cosy textured longline coat.

The mid-length coat

Best for: petite frames and outfits with shorter skirts.

Ending around mid-thigh, this length keeps proportions balanced and is easy to move in. It's a great choice if a longline coat feels like it swallows you.

Try: Adeline, a tailored mid-length coat, or Brenna, a cosy collared coat.

The trench

Best for: autumn and mild winter days, and rain.

The trench is the most versatile transitional coat. Belt it for shape or leave it open for a relaxed look. On colder days, add a cardigan or vest underneath.

The quilted puffer

Best for: the coldest days, school runs and weekend walks.

A quilted jacket is all about practical warmth. A hood helps on windy, wet days, and a zip front makes it quick to throw on. To keep it looking smart, pair it with tailored trousers or a knit dress rather than only sportswear.

Try: Calla, a lined quilted hooded jacket, Ainsley, a quilted zip-up hooded jacket, or the full Puffer Jackets edit.

The blazer

Best for: layering under a coat, and indoor polish.

A blazer isn't a winter coat on its own, but it's the layer that makes a winter outfit look sharp once the coat comes off. Choose a relaxed fit so it sits comfortably over knitwear.

Try: Audrey, a tailored double-breasted blazer, or Juno, a soft draped button-tab blazer.

Getting the fit right

  • Shoulders first. The shoulder seam should sit at or just past your natural shoulder.
  • Try it over a jumper. If you can't cross your arms comfortably, size up.
  • Check the sleeve. It should reach the base of your thumb, so it covers the cuffs of the layers underneath.

Every coat page includes a size guide. If you're between sizes, our team is happy to advise via the contact page, and you have 30 days to return it if it isn't right.
