Puffer Jacket Outfits That Still Look Smart
A quilted jacket can look just as polished as a wool coat. Four outfit ideas and three simple rules.

A quilted puffer jacket is the most practical coat you can own for a British winter. But it's easy to fall into wearing it only with leggings and trainers. With a few simple swaps, a puffer can look just as smart as a wool coat. Here's how.
Pair it with tailoring
The quickest way to elevate a puffer is to wear it with something tailored. Wide-leg or pressed trousers balance the volume of the jacket and make the whole look more grown-up. Finish with ankle boots rather than trainers.
Try: Calla, a cosy lined quilted hooded jacket, with Prudence, high-waisted wide-leg trousers.
Wear it over a knit dress
A knit or turtleneck dress under a puffer is warm, easy and surprisingly elegant. Add tall boots so the hem of the dress meets the top of the boot, and you'll be warm from head to toe.
Try: Meredith, a turtleneck dress, with Gretchen, riding-style tall boots.
Keep it tonal
Matching your puffer to the rest of your outfit (cream with cream, or black with charcoal) makes it look intentional. A matching knitted set underneath is the easiest way to do this.
Try: Mariette, an elegant turtleneck two-piece set, under a neutral quilted jacket like Ainsley.
Or go sleeveless
A quilted gilet gives you warmth where you need it, with more freedom than a full jacket. Layer it over a chunky jumper or a shirt and cardigan for crisp autumn days.
Try: Whitney, a quilted zip-up gilet.
Smart puffer rules
- Balance the volume. A big jacket looks best with a streamlined lower half or a long, straight line.
- Swap trainers for boots. Leather-look ankle or tall boots instantly make it smarter.
- Pick a neutral. Black, cream, chocolate or khaki go with everything else in your wardrobe.
